Clinical interests have included victims, secure hospitals, and community forensic psychiatry, including setting up specialised housing for mentally disordered offenders in Brixton.
Past-chairman of the Forensic Psychiatry Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and one time member of its Council and of its Court of Electors as well as chairman of a working parties on suicide in prisoners and another on supporting psychiatrists under stress. Examiner for the Royal College for more than a decade and Deputy Chief Examiner.
Psychiatric adviser to two parliamentary committees (one on the violence in marriage, the other on the Prison Medical Service), to the Department of Health and to the Home Office, and a member of the Royal Commission on Criminal Justice. Lecturer and advisor to the Metropolitan Police on the psychiatry of sieges (including attendance at the Iranian Embassy Siege).
International activities have included an H B Williams Travelling Professor in Australia and New Zealand; visiting assessor- forensic psychiatry service, Clarke Institute, Toronto; member, Ontario government inquiry into Oak Ridge Unit, Penetagnuishene; two visits for the Committee for the Prevention of Torture of the Council of Europe; assessor to La Paquerette socio-therapeutic prison unit in Geneva; Co- chairman of informal group of trainers in forensic psychiatry - the Ghent Group.
Currently member of the Parole Board for England and Wales.
